Interface of junior and senior secondary curricula

In preparation for the NSS curriculum, a survey was conducted in order to understand the needs and interests of students, and the expectation of parents. Also, the strengths of our teachers would be considered in the hope that the design of the NSS curriculum would help students achieve well-balanced development.

In our existing junior secondary curriculum, there are two lessons of Moral and Civic Education each cycle in which students have in-depth discussion on different issues. Some of these elements correspond with the ones in the syllabus of Liberal Studies.

Moreover, in the existing Secondary 3 curriculum, there are two Guided Activity Periods (GAP) each cycle to nurture students' ability to learn independently, which is emphasised in the study of Liberal Studies. Good language ability is also another prerequisite for succeeding in Liberal Studies. Therefore, we would strengthen the language learning of our junior secondary students to improve their ability in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Different forms of activities in our curriculum and various extra-curricular activities are also held in order to further develop students' generic skills.

Preparation for Liberal Studies

In 2009, there will be six teachers responsible for teaching Liberal Studies. They will be in three pairs, with an arts teacher and a science teacher in each pair. Each class will be taught by one of the three pairs. Six more teachers will join the team in 2010.

The Liberal Studies Department has been established with a team of thirteen teachers, including the department head. They have meetings regularly to prepare the syllabus and materials needed for the launch of the subject.
